photography tip #1

here's a new idea!
  • how about between picture posts i'll post tips for all of you who also have your own cameras from all the stuff i've been reading? (since it takes me a while to sort, then process my pictures, and then to find time to upload them...
  • these tips will be helpful if you have point and shoots or even SLRs, so everyone can make their own pictures look better! i'll be posting around every 2 weeks to let you have time to apply the tip to your own pictures, then i'll try to come up with a new one..

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP #1: Rule of Thirds (principle)

you know the 4 lines that go across the LCD screen on point and shoots? that look like this:

there's several reasons why they have it there:
1) make sure lines in your picture look straight, but more importantly,
2) it helps you compose your picture
b) there's a principle called the rule of thirds, which means you are supposed to put the main subject of your shot at 1/3 from the border of your shot, (along the red lines) or better yet, put the main subject at the points where the red lines intersect.
main subject - can be a person, animal, whatever you're trying to make people look at.
this rule also applies to horizons. place them 1/3 from the top or bottom, depending if you're emphasizing the sky or the land.
there's very few exceptions to this rule, but you'll know it when you come across those exceptions.

so from now on, frame your main subject at 1/3 from the border!
if you look at photographer's pictures, 98%+ do this, because it makes the picture look more dynamic! try it :)

the next subject will be on how to focus lock...
